One of the many ways in which designers can make a positive impact on the environment through their production methods is recycling and upcycling discarded and forgotten garments. Two (2) labels to highlight for taking on this initiative as the bedrock of their mission is Bettter and Conner Ives.
Bettter is a multifaceted upcycling system aimed at disrupting traditional production systems by redesigning old and abandoned garments, giving them a new life. The label operates on a zero-waste model, and through the use of technology transforms discarded clothing into new designer pieces.
Their collections are released in limited quantities and each piece is uniquely designed. Bettter joins a small, but growing list of emerging designers who are taking action to transform the fashion industry's toxic relationship with the environment.

A graduate of Central Saint Martins, the American designer, Conner Ives has dressed the likes of Rihanna and Camila Coelho in his uniquely designed pieces with his use of deadstock fabric and recycled vintage clothing. The designer creates his collections with inspiration that draws on streetwear and youth culture.
As this burgeoning sub-sector of the fashion industry continues to make strides into the mainstream fashion market, we remain sanguine about the future of the fashion industry and its relationship with our planet.
